Karrakatta, Western Australia
Design by Slavin Architects | Torrance & McKenna | Artifex Australia
A special place calls for a special fitout. Slavin Architects worked with the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board to refresh the main chapel at Karrakatta cemetery, creating a welcoming and calming space that invites contemplation and reflection in a comfortable, spacious environment.
The project brief focused on native local marri timber, paired with a custom leather created especially for this project.
Brought to life through a collaboration of local artisans led by Torrance & McKenna and Artifex Australia, the result is a versatile and gentle interior footprint. The combination of natural timber and superbly soft, neural leather creates a light and fresh feel for a space that nurtures some of life’s most sombre moments.
Side note: One of Murray Slavin’s earliest architectural projects was the design of 346 William Street, Perth – home to Decor Design Centre for more than 45 years. The Norfolk Chapel collaboration happened fifty years after that original commission.
